The following is taken from an article in PC Pro about our local telephone exchange (which for most is probably 'Rustington') winning an early adoption to 'superfast' fibre broadband.

Top 5 highest vote for each exchange win, though I accept we're unlikely to succeed (hell, we've exhausted all of our luck on the skateboard park ) but seeing as we're not lucky enough to be in a [Virgin Media] cabled area, this is definitely worth taking 30 seconds to register your vote, especially as it will raise our profile for future roll outs. Click: http://www.racetoinfinity.bt.com/ and bang in your post-code...simple as that!

Tell your friends and family (maybe a news item, Neil?) as although we might not need superfast broadband right now, 10 years down the line we may really need it (not to mention the increase in our property's 'saleability'!)

BT is conducting a nationwide survey to find out where demand for high-speed fibre broadband is at its highest.

In an echo of its original ADSL rollout, BT will ask members of the public to express their interest in fibre broadband services. Unlike the ADSL scheme, however, there are no guarantees that an exchange will be upgraded to fibre when it reaches a certain trigger level.

BT has promised to upgrade the five exchanges that show the most interest in fibre by early 2012, but that's a small drop in the ocean given there are almost 5,600 telephone exchanges in the UK.

Nevertheless, BT says the survey results "could see commercially viable exchanges brought forward to the front of the queue or non-viable exchanges added to the deployment plans".

Broadband customers are being asked to express their interest in fibre at the Race To Infinity website, although the website wasn't working properly in the Google Chrome browser when we tested it this morning.

The survey will run until the end of the year, when the five winning exchanges will be announced.

Hi Maxiboost.

Good call on this one. I have just voted and when I did the current stats were as follows:

100 votes have been cast out of a total of 13,777

Giving the Rustington exchange 0.73% of the vote.

Lets see if we can increase this

Hmmm, we now have 137 votes out of 13,777 (0.99%). So the same number of total votes but we have gained 37 - looks like there have been some strange activities in the last 7 hours, or does the 13,777 refer to "lines" in the area.

It does rather imply that BT do not have a rollout programme. I recently completed an enquiry as to when this area would have "superfast" broadband and the response was that they did not yet know. I found that rather strange as a project of that size must have some idea of when areas are being done, or was it that they did not want to admit it would be years away?

Following on from above, take a look at this message from West Sussex County Council regarding broadband: http://www.westsussex.gov.uk/your_council/news_room/press_office/press_release_archive/2010/december_2010/still_time_to_have_your_say_on.aspx

The questionnaire only takes a few minutes to complete but it could well be worth taking the time. http://www2.westsussex.gov.uk/customerinsight/broadband.htm - at the end you can also register for broadband updates from WSCC.
