Want another photo? A lot of the supply of more modern photos of Angmering have been used, so the views I'm showing are becoming more historic. The next one is no exception.
PHOTO NO. 19
So, where do you think this location is today?

Interesting guess, but incorrect.
Actually, the Pound itself was on the other side of Roundstone (west side) about 50 yards to the south of Pound House. |

Not sure what the place is called - Up the high Street heading towards the Cow, there is a building on the left that may be called Pigeon House Farm or House. I think the far left of the photo shows the edge of the house there. |

You are referring to Pigeon House. No, it's not there.
I think that wall is causing the problem. I think much of it has now gone. |

Sorry, clueless. I appreciate that this is really a difficult photo. Nobody has mentioned the pond! The first clue may not help at all: "Went unravelled"! |

I hate cryptic clues Is it where they have built the medical centre, that used to be a wetlands area beforehand.
No idea on the clues though. |

Wrong on both accounts, I'm afraid clueless.
If it's any consolation, I can't do cryptic crosswords either. That's why these clues are so bad!
Perhaps tomorrow's readers might have a crack at this one.
But where was there once a pond???? Old Angmeringers will know this one. |

The village Green then?
http://www.angmeringvillage.co.uk/maps/1809_map.jpg
No idea what that has to do with those clues though, "Went Unravelled" I took to be an anagram of 'newt' and a tipsy footballer could be as drunk as one I suppose. |

Wrong about the pond where the Green is now. However, you're right about the anagram - Newt. But where was the Newt Pond? Try analysing the words in the clue - some individual words or groups of words might help, others may hinder. |

Book seems familiar - probably on the grounds that I edited it back in 2003!
Well tracked down clueless. However, at present your guess is wrong. And so I'm afraid is DEGOO.
But who has the book? And will anyone beat you to the answer! Can anyone use the clues to guess correctly? |

"Well turned out ( footballer ) ( found to be ) tipsy before joining field ( of play )" was the clue.
Is that clearer? Two locations indicated here. "Footballer" was a third clue but may or may not help - so forget it for the moment. |

Coud 'well turned out' be dapper? And 'tipsy' merry? Possibly Merryfield Crescent/Dappers Lane. |

Yes, I've got to give it to you Bluebell. Well done. The Newt Pond, as it was known by locals, lay in the eastern corner of a field between Dappers Lane and Water Lane.
If you look in the east corner of Merryfield Crescent today, you will see that the dip where the pond was is still there, and that two detached houses are in the dip.
For a while, the village football field (further clue) lay just above the pond in the field.
Clues:
Went unravelled = anagram of Newt (Pond) Well turned out = Dapper tipsy before joining field = Merryfield (Crescent) wreat confused = anagram of Water (Lane)
As confused had sussed from the index to "Angmering - Reminiscences of bygone days", page 53 of publication tells you all about this. Copies in the Library for borrowing, if required.
Phew! That was hard work! |
