Not sure if this is the right place to post but re the above that appeared in Village Life. William S Horton's son, William Gray Horton was married to Gwen, the daughter of Edward De Bas. I think it is her brother, also Edward De Bas who lived at the White Cottage, Angmering and is also buried in St Margarets churchyard. Like William S Horton, De Bas was a painter and friend of the Bloomsbury set.
Hope that sheds a flicker of light. Glad the grave has been revealed.

Suec, I'm actively researching the Horton and Le Bas families which are proving to be absolutely fascinating. This afternoon I spoke to William S Horton's granddaughter who lives in France and gained more information about the family. On Thursday I was phoned from Nigeria by her brother, Robin Horton, the well known anthropologist (now in his 80th year) who told me that he lived for the first 7 years of his life at Pound House.

Actually it was Edward Le Bas Snr (the wealthy industrialist) who lived at The White Cottage in Rectory Lane (now White Lodge), and who is buried in the churchyard, and not his son Edward, the artist.

Also on Thursday I received an email from a lady who has done much research into the bombing of the Guards Chapel in which Gwen Horton was killed who provided reams of information on the families.

Yesterday, I did some research at the West Sussex Record Office and found quite a bit about the installation and dedication of the 16th century Horton window, but still no information from where it originally came.

Earlier in the week, I received the full service history of William Gray Horton from the Scot's Guards archives - had to pay for this!

I'm sitting here writing this surrounded by documents relating to these families. It is unbelievable with whom they are connected.

Wow, Neil. Seems we are on the same path - except I think you've reached the main road! My interest in the family is because they lived at a house in Montagu Sq, Marylebone. Robin & Carlotta were born there. I'm writing a house history for the current owners. They are a riveting family.
