I noticed in the latest Police Reports that there were a number of SatNav thefts from insecure cars. As these appear to have happened overnight I wonder if, rather than owners not bothering to lock their cars, they are accidentally unlocking them with a remote fob and not realising it. I know I have done it on occasions. Or is it a case of someone having a device that works on a number of cars? |

Very good point Paul. I know the other night my better half had his keys in his pocket and sat on them. Without realising it was sending signals and the car was unlocked. It was only pure luck that I was walking past the front door (which is glass) and I saw the lights on the car flashing as his remote was going off in his pocket! he would have had no idea if I had not of seen this and gone to bed thinking the car was locked!
Guess the moral of this is - dont keep your keys in your pocket!

one was taken from a vehicle in the street on which i reside... i often left my car unlocked until i saw that report, and doubt i was the only one... actually thinking about it, my iphone car charger has been missing since the 15th of last month, wonder if they took that too? there's only 17 houses in the street in question, i don't know who was the victim but whoever it was doing the rounds on that night was clearly intent on touring the village and pinching stuff out of cars, and they knew just the right places to go, which suggests that it was someone with local knowledge... actually recently we have also seen an incident where people wrote racial abuse on a dirty car in our street... and some of the older kids have absolutely foul mouths around young children in the playgrounds... i could go on... glad i don't intend to stick around in angmering for much longer, it is going seriously downhill.... |

Ah, but -
1. The car automatically re-locks itself if a door is not opened within one minute of being unlocked, and ..
2. I could have been sitting on the lock button anyway
Fair point though - not all cars have that auto re-lock feature. I'd only have my keys on my person at home after using the USB flash drive on the same keyring and I suppose you could accidentaly unlock your car just by picking the keys up from wherever you dumped them - or by fishing them out of a pocket - to hang them up (don't hang them opposite your letterbox BTW). |

it also concerns me that the police have not bothered to ask neighbours of the victims of the theft if they saw anything.... probably because they don't actually intend to do anything about it anyway... |

I agree with Felicia, it strikes me as odd not even to ask the neighbours, especially in these warmer months when windows could be open and suspicious activities heard/seen. We had one of these break-ins along our road, my window directly overlooks the car that was broken into and the police didn't bother to ask us. On this occassion, although a very light sleeper, I didn't hear anything. I know most people would approach the police when they saw them on the scene but someone with information could have missed them being there. Not a good show by sussex police as I think we all need a reminder every now and again to be more alert! |
