The Square
|
It was not until the mid-19th century that The
Square took on the appearance as we see it today. Prior to that time, the area
what we know as the Green was a large pond that flooded and made the centre
often impassible. Most of the shops until then were situated up the High Street
or in Arundel Road. The Lamb Inn, of course, was in its current location. The
lime trees on the Green were not planted until 1905. The war memorial on the
Green was erected in 1920. |
