90th Birthday

We've received a request from Mr Keith Tullett to publish the following communication in which he pays tribute to Mrs Vera Lowe on her 90th birthday on Christmas Day. Mrs Lowe will be known to many of our older readers who have lived in Angmering for much of their lives.

"I would like to take this opportunity to wish Mrs Vera Lowe a Very Happy Birthday on 25TH DECEMBER 2009. Vera and her husband John Lowe were kind enough to take me in as one of her family in the 1950s after I lost my mother to cancer when I was only 9 years old. At the age of 90 she is still the same kind and loving lady she was back in those days. We lived in Lloyd Goring Close in those days which was a very friendly place with all families pulling together to help each other - that's the one thing Angmering still has - and it's evident on the AVL site today bringing ex-village people from all over the world together to keep in touch via the Guest Pages. As I now live in Derbyshire I would like to say thank you to Vera via the Angmering Village Life site, and to Neil for being kind enough in trying to help me in my request.

A bit on me - I was born in Rustington in 1944, joined the Army in 1961 to 1973 and am now retired and living in Derbyshire since 1973 but try to visit 3 or 4 times a year to take in the village and the fresh air and to retrace my paper round. Once again many thanks to all who are involved in this great site - keep it up. Merry Christmas and Happy new Year to All. Many Regards.

A Christmas Cracker at the Raceway

It will be a full day of action-packed racing that will blow away the winter chill at Angmering raceway (www.ovalraceclub.co.uk) on Sunday December 27th when the all-action 1400cc nudge and spin bangers take to the track in a massive day of team racing in the Scott West Memorial meeting.

Junior Rods, A and B Production, Modified C, Production Stox and Saloon Rod formulas will also take to the track in pursuit of points in the ongoing Winter Championship series. The stock car stars of the future will be taking to the track in the junior formulas, competing in Minis (engine sized at 1000cc for 10 to 16 year olds) and up to 1200cc cars for those aged 12 to 16.

The adult modified formulas will deliver racing action from a wide range of cars with engine sizes ranging from 1300 to 1600cc and connecting to the track via front or rear wheel drive. At the top end of the power scale, the Saloon Rods, driven by 1600 and above cc engines will be taking on the demanding Angmering circuit as their drivers push the high-powered cars to the limit to gain those vital points in the championship stakes. The crazy nudge and spin Bangers will round the day ending up as twisted wrecks with a metal-bashing demolition derby.

With a massive grid of cars, offering something for fans of non-contact and contact racing and the drivers determined to put the pedal very firmly to the metal to gain points in the Winter Championship, Angmering will deliver a great action packed and value for money day out for all the family on December 27th.

The entrance to the circuit is located in Water Lane near the junction of Angmering By-Pass and the road leading to the village. The gates open at 8am, with racing commencing at 11.30am. Adult admission is £10; kids 10-14, £5, with kids under ten free. Senior Citizens, disabled and Students (with valid student cards) can also enjoy a days racing for just £5. Angmering Charity Christmas Bangers & Smash!

Angmering Raceway (www.ovalraceclub.co.uk) proudly hosts a special nudge and spin banger race - the Santa Slaughter - to help raise money for the Chestnut Tree Children's Hospice on Sunday December 13th. Big-hearted banger racers will be competing in the race with their cars decked out in the best Christmas fashion as they tear around the track and into each other raising money for this most worthwhile cause.

There will be trophies on the day for the best Christmas themed car and one for the best Father Christmas. So drivers, with shall we be polite and say a generous girth around the waist, are being urged to don the Father Christmas suit and beard on the day. It may be the season of goodwill, but there will not be too much of that spirit on the track as the bangers that survive the charity race, will not survive until the presents are unwrapped as the day ends with the crowd-pleasing demolition derby from which only the last car left moving can claim the prize.

In addition to the charity race there will be a full compliment of supporting formulas, ranging from street stocks through saloon rods to junior rods, offering a wide range of racing action for all tastes. The entrance to the race track is situated in Water Lane at the junction between the A280 (Angmering By-Pass) and the road leading into the village

The gates open at 8am, with racing commencing at 11.30am. Adult admission is £10; Kids (10-14) £5, with Kids under ten free. Senior Citizens, disabled and Students (with valid student cards) can also enjoy a day's racing for just £5. Angmering Raceway also offers free parking on hard core surfaces. Children and Family Centre officially opens

Although the Angmering Children and Family Centre started operating at the Library 18 months' ago, it was officially opened today by County Councillor Patricia Arculus, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People's Services. Also present were Country Councillor Deborah Urquhart (representative for Angmering & Findon), Stuart Fairweather (WSCC Children's Centres area manager), Caroline Gibbins (manager of the Angmering Centre), Centre staff and outreach workers, representatives from partnership agencies and from the local community, as well as children and parents from the Angmering area. A clown was also on hand to bring some fun to the event for the children attending.

In opening the Centre, Councillor Arculus thanked those who had contributed their time and ideas which were already making the Centre a valuable resource. She also paid tribute to the variety of agencies which worked in close partnership with the Centre. She added that children love exploring and learning through play, which is why the Centre is somewhere where parents can come with their children to share learning opportunities in a safe, exciting and friendly environment, knowing that support is available when needed.

Within the last few weeks, the yard at the rear of the Centre has been opened up which provides a bright colourful play area and small garden beds where children can do planting and watch their flowers or seeds grow. Later, seating will be provided and a covered buggy park will be built. A corkscrew hazel tree is being planted which, Councillor Arculus said, was chosen because every stem is unique - just like every child. She added that each stem and branch chooses to reach out in a different direction, just like parents and their children.

Here are some photos from today's opening.

Victoria County History published for Angmering

Notification has today been received that the long-awaited volume of the Victoria County History covering the parish of Angmering (Volume V.ii) has now been published. The volume also covers the histories of Burpham, Ferring, Goring, Kingston, Littlehampton, Lyminster, Poling, East Preston, Rustington, North Stoke and Warningcamp.

The Victoria County History (VCH), the greatest publishing project in English local history, was founded in 1899 and dedicated to Queen Victoria. It was created to produce an encyclopaedic national history in a series of volumes which cover, county by county, and parish by parish, the general and detailed history of England from earliest times to the present. The first volume for Sussex (Vol. I) was published in 1903 but the initial parish coverage for Sussex, Vol. IV, did not appear until 1953. Since then, Angmering historians have been awaiting for our parish history to be published.

In the VCH, each parish is structured in a similar manner. For Angmering, there are major sections on general history, landownership, economic history, local government, religious history, and education together with numerous maps and photos.

The new Volume V.ii is only available in hardback form and comprises 394 pages, 131 b/w illustrations, and. 31 line illustrations. The normal cost is £95 but, readers of Angmering Village Life, are able to purchase this at a 25% discount reducing the cost to £71.25. Postage is £4. Honey Lane
The Senior Assistant Clerk reported that the Parish Council had been awarded a grant from West Sussex County Council for £2142 for improvements to the Honey Lane right of way. Councillor Bicknell will prepare a detailed spec to be approved by WSCC, this will then go through the tendering process. Councillor Bicknell also said that there was a need for two additional street lights and he will incorporate these as part of the overall project.

Chandlers Garage
Councillor Bicknell said he had written to BMW thanking them for arranging a later delivery (6.45am) for their car parts. He also requested smaller delivery vans be used within the village. BMW have replied saying that smaller vans are not an option due the large delivery round.

Additional Lighting
Meadowside/Greenacres Ring - Councillor Bicknell said he had look at the requirement for a new light at the corner of Meadowside and Greenacres Ring. He felt the existing lights were probably adequate but appeared to be very dim at the moment, he asked if WSCC could have a look at the exisiting lights then the need for a new one could be reviewed.
Mayflower Park - The Senior Assistant Clerk reported that WSCC had advised that it would take approximately 10 lights at a cost of £15k to light the area from the education land to WSCC land at the A259. The committee asked if WSCC could look at alternative low level lighting such as lights in the footpath or adjacent to it as this could be less intrusive and might be a less expensive solution.
Honey Lane - The lights for Honey Lane will be reviewed as part of the Honey Lane project under ‘Rights of Way’ 09/65 (b).
