Angmering Village Life website - the future

In three days time this website will be celebrating its first birthday. We hope there has been something within its pages over the last year that you have found useful, informative, or occasionally amusing. Judging by feedback and statistics, we think it is worth continuing. For those interested in statistics, the number of people accessing it has grown steadily month by month and the site now has about 3000 visitors a month. Over the year visitors have accessed over 72,000 pages. These figures are, of course, quite small when compared with many other websites, but reasonable figures when thinking in village terms. The site has attracted visitors from 101 countries, the Top 10 being (1) GB (2) USA (3) Australia (4) Canada (5) NZ (6) Sweden (7) Germany (8) Spain (9) Netherlands (10) France.

But where do we go from here. Well, the first thing we need to do is create more webspace as we are operating with little to spare. To this end, hosting webspace has been purchased and we hope to migrate to the new provider within the next 10 days. Based on our experience in testing over the last couple of weeks, we anticipate that the website may be unavailable at www.angmeringvillage.co.uk for 2-3 days during transfer, but it will be available during that down time at a mirror site at www.vaugrat.demon.co.uk/Angvil/ . You may wish to make a note of that address.

The next thing we intend to do after that is to provide several forums where Angmering people (or those from further afield) can express their views on a variety of topics, or ask questions on Angmering related matters, and others will be able to post replies, give advice, express disagreement, support an argument, etc. This, in theory, can lead to lively debates and it only to be hoped that abuse does not creep in. If it does, then we may intervene.

Other things planned is a weathercam which will upload a picture of local weather (including, say, skies to the south-west) every 20 minutes and more photos of the parish. This could include more old photos if readers are interested in them. History pages will also continue to expand. Additionally, we are planning to have a news archive where it will be possible to look back over news from previous months/years. If there is anything you would like to see, do contact us - we cannot promise that we will be able to do it but at least we can give it some consideration.

May we take this opportunity of wishing all our readers a very Happy New Year.

New Surgery/Pharmacy

The constructors started putting down the concrete footings for the pharmacy yesterday on the north-east side of the surgery. No doubt they will complete the base foundation work this week and start construction in earnest after the Christmas/New Year holidays.

St Margaret's School's spirit of Christmas

There certainly seems to be a strong ethos at St Margaret's C of E Primary School for giving to those in need.

Headteacher David Boreham has told Angmering Village Life that following two lively performances last week of the Year 5 and 6 Christmas Production of 'Panto Pandemonium' , a total of £394 was raised for the Chestnut Tree House Children's Hospice.

Also it is at this time of year that the children bring into school their Barnardos cottage boxes for emptying. Currently the school has 100 children collecting money within their families throughout the year with a total of £513 being collected this time round. This brings their grand total since they started the scheme back in 1988, to £10,400. What a magnificent effort which provides an excellent example to others of what could be done if everyone put aside their small change (say, 1p, 2p and 5p) for charities of their choice.

Credit where it's due!

Walking around the open space on Bramley Green (where the proposed community centre would be located), I noticed that the builders' fences have now come down and the play facilities were in full view. These are well fenced and split between two playgrounds separating those of the younger and older children. And what a superb job the developers have done in providing marvellous activity equipment which, for the older children, is in the form of a low-level assault course. What looks like a tarmac is actually a rubberised surface which would provide a cushioned effect in case of a fall. Congratulations to the developers in providing such a well thought out play area and quality equipment. All we need now is cooperation from Hargreaves to fulfill their obligations and open up the walkways into Bramley Green from Mill Road and Greenwood Drive which will allow others to enjoy these new village facilities.

Disgraced Teacher Sentenced

Angmering School teacher, Mrs Samantha Grixti (30), who was found guilty at the beginning of November of intentionally sexually touching a boy pupil was sentenced today at Chichester Magistrates Court. The mother of a two year old son received a 3 months prison sentence, suspended for 2 years, and 180 hours community service. She will also be placed on the sex offenders list. Mrs Grixti, who was suspended by the school, now faces action under their agreed disciplinary procedures which will no doubt lead to her dismissal.

St Margaret's Church - Re-ordering

It will be noted from this week's planning applications (see below - List 49 ) that Angmering Parochial Church Council (PCC) has applied to Arun District Council to carry out alterations to St Margaret's Church. These alterations are probably the most significant since the church's re-building in 1853 and have resulted in some lively debate in the village! The PCC needs to apply for permission for three principal reasons, namely, because (a) the changes involve demolition of a permanent structure and involve re-building, (c) the church is a Grade II* Listed Building, and (c) the church is in Angmering's Conservation Area.

It must be stressed that planning permission is sought from ADC only for the church's external alterations. It does not need its permission to carry out the internal alterations which is a Church and not a civil matter.

Parish residents were given the opportunity of viewing the proposals and providing the PCC with their comments at an Open Exhibition at the church on 5 November. A further opportunity of seeing the proposals was given on the 7 December during the Angmering Village Traders' Christmas Evening.

People now wishing to make comments (for or against) the proposals for the external alterations must let Arun District Council have these before 10 January. The plans and supporting data can be viewed at ADC's offices in Littlehampton or they should be available at the Angmering Parish Council Offices from Monday 19 December. Alternatively, you can now see the PCC's total submission on-line on the ADC Planning site by clicking here. After the page opens, enter A/144/05 in the first search box and press <Search>. This will bring up the St Margaret's application. Now click on the underlined reference "A/144/05" which will bring up outline details of the application. Clicking on "Documents" at the top right-hand side of the page will open a screen with full details of the application including: the application document itself, the detailed plans, the design statement, the statement of need, the statement of significance, and a document giving details of all the consultations. Some of these documents consist of up to 18 pages. Note - on opening the final screen, you may be presented with a security warning; however, it is safe to run this application.

New History Resources

A new page has now been added for the 19th century Freeland family of Angmering. This family is particularly interesting as Henry William Freeland and his son Samuel George were professional photographers whose local work is widely recognised today. Your can read more about the family and find a link to samples of their photos by clicking here. The previous article on Angmering's Roman Villa site was a bit 'thin' and this has now been rectified by the inclusion of greater detail and a diagram of the substantial bath house. Click here to see the revised page.

Village Christmas Evening - Wednesday 7 December

For anyone who was unaware of this event or who has forgotten about it, please make a note in your diary. This annual event is being held next Wednesday evening between 6.00pm and about 9.00pm around the village Square - only 5 more days to go! There's lots of entertainment and fun for all the family so do come along and support it. Once again, it's been put on by the village traders.

The usual children's fairground will be in Arundel Road and the Square which will include a huge bouncy slide and merry-go-rounds. Candyfloss will be available as will be a luck dip and there will also be free balloons for the children. Santa will again be in his Grotto with a free gift for every child. The fire brigade will be at the side of the Green with an engine for the children to climb over plus they will be doing a demonstration on a chip pan fire. It is also hoped that, like previous years, there will be music of some kind in the village centre.

Many of the shops will be open and a number of them will be providing free mince pies or sausage rolls and, if you're lucky, free drinks. The Library will be open with a book sale plus refreshments and hopefully some live musical entertainment. Also the Parish Council offices will be open so there is the opportunity of meeting your parish councillors and having a 'free' drink from the parish rates!

If you missed St Margaret's Open Exhibition on 5 November, the church will be open on the evening and the plans for the re-ordering will be on display again. The church invites you to go along and enjoy some mulled wine and mince pies and have a look at what they hope St Margaret's will look like in the near future.

There will be a really big tombola this year with some 100 prizes including wine, twin telephone set, luggage, camping gear, cool bags, and loads more. There will also be the usual raffle. Raffle prizes are: 1st - child's bike ; 2nd - £50 note ; 3rd hamper ; 4th set of luggage ; 5th gift pack ; 6th Portuguese wine ; 7th hair care pack.

I hope that whets your appetite and that you and your family and friends will come and support this community event as there has been much effort in organising it. Arundel Road will be closed to vehicular traffic from about 5.00pm but it is understood that some additional parking will be available in Chandlers.

Build-Out Prang!

Two vehicles were in a minor collision at about 8.30 this morning at the southern build-out in Station Road near Greenwood Drive. This resulted in some slight traffic delays. The main damage was to a red car coming from the north - its front offside wheel was severely damaged.
