Several times recently, I've been asked whether I could put up some new photos on the website.

Today I've uploaded two new photos - Elmgrove Cottage in the Square and one of the Decoy Ponds. These can be found through the "Photos of Village" link in the left-hand navigation bar or directly at http://www.angmeringvillage.co.uk/gallery_present.htm. Hope you enjoy them.

Now that the excavations in St Nicholas Gardens have been completed, in advance of APC making the Worthing Archaeological Society report available to the public at some time in the future, I have made my own (inexpert) observations on the AVL St Nicholas Church page at:

Four more photos sets (nos. 19, 20, 21 & 22) have just been added to the AVL Then & Now photo/history page. This project, which commenced at the beginning of this year, can be found at:

Ah, thanks BFA, I must have missed updating the Forums link at the top of the News page. This has now been fixed.

It certainly should not happen as code used within AVL links should force the Forums to open in a completely new tag/window and not within the AVL frame. Has she tried clearing the cache? Presume you do not have the same problem with your browser.

I do not have any problems with my versions of IE, Chrome, and Firefox.

I've worked it out. It's nothing to do with the browser of choice, it's to do with the route taken to access the forum.

All of the AVL pages have the links to them in the left sidebar and also at the bottom of the page. All that is bar the news page, that has the links at the TOP of the page as well and if you click the forum link at the top of the news page a new window/tag is not opened and the header and sidebar remain as per the rest of the pages.

Does any other reader have this adware problem when reading the Forums?
Lulu Posted - 23 Aug 2014 : 00:01:18
Thanks, Neil.
neil Posted - 22 Aug 2014 : 23:40:20
Thanks for the file, Lulu. Having done a little research, it would appear your browser has been infected by the Codec-V adware virus:
quote:
CodecV adware infiltrates your browser and installed as an extension or add-on. It is the code behind some coupons and online advertisement that may suddenly appear on your browser. Ads supported by CodecV are banners, pop-ups, pop-under, interstitial, and in-text. In short, primary goal of this adware is to generate revenue through several monetization programs.
Search Google for ways to eliminate this virus from your PC. Have a look at this:

Neil, I have copied a page of the forum, with some ads on it. Is there an address I could email it to, so you can see what`s there

No need, from AVL the forum opens in a new window. I had the forum in my favourites, I've added AVL, problem sorted.

However, my wife's choice of browser shows this http://i.imgur.com/BlGyMAB.jpg

It's funny, as I never had them before, and they only seem to pop up in your posts, and at the top of the page. I do have a pop up blocker, that`s why I was wondering. I`ll do a scan this evening, though, and see if anything comes up.
neil Posted - 22 Aug 2014 : 17:07:55
Lulu, I have never seen a pop-up ad on any of my PCs, laptops, or tablets. Do you use a pop-up blocker or, if you use Internet Explorer as a browser, is the pop-up blocker enabled in your Security settings?

As this appears to be something recent, maybe you have picked up a virus or malware somehow? Do you scan your PC(?) regularly with software such as Malwarebytes which will remove things such as Adware.
neil Posted - 22 Aug 2014 : 16:51:44
BFA, I understand and appreciate what you are saying. However, as you know, I want to distance AVL from the Forums as much as possible with hopefully readers coming direct to the Forums' Home page using a separate link. Using the Forums' Home link to take readers to the AVL Home page would therefore undermine what I am trying to achieve.

The Snitz Forums that I use are systemised package and it may be impossible to add, say, a link to "AVL". However, I will continue searching the substantial coding files to see whether this is possible.

If you come to the Forums via AVL, would not the back button take you back to AVL?

Lulu Posted - 22 Aug 2014 : 13:55:19
Neil, when did all the pop up ads start on this forum, or is it just me?
BFA Posted - 22 Aug 2014 : 12:57:53
You can get here from AVL but you can't get back to AVL from here - you used to be able to but now 'Home' takes you to the main forum page. Would be useful.

For those who have not noticed, there has been a bit of a makeover to the AVL opening page - redesigned primarily for new visitors to the site. In fact there is a new heading for the whole site - this has been changed from an archaic Old English font to a more modern script font.

About 30% of the text on the opening page has gone. Some of it has been replaced by the inclusion of a sub-heading which hopefully describes more instantly what the website is all about. The remaining text has been re-ordered and more direct hyperlinks included. The scrolling banner has also been changed to one that is now centred and can contain more impact text when required.

However, the biggest change is in the photos. The previous two small photos have gone and have been replaced by a larger centred one of The Green and Square. Additionally there are thumbnails of another six photos representing various aspects of Angmering. When the mouse cursor hovers over them (or touched in the case of a tablet) they will expand in size.

After being off-line for about 3 years, Angmering Village Life's own weather camera is again functioning. You can view the current skies over Angmering by clicking the camera icon in the left-hand navigation bar. Press your PC's 'Refresh' button (F5) to see the skies changing. The camera is situated off Roundstone Lane and points west over the centre of the village.

Our weather station has been collecting and transmitting data to the website almost continuously since 2005. The data is uploaded automatically every 20 minutes. The link to the weather station can also be found in the left-hand navigation bar.

A new page has been added in the Photos section of AVL. This is a "Then & Now" comparison of photos of old Angmering with those taken recently. The page is in its early stages and more photos will be added during the year. The page can be found via the "Photos & Videos" link in the AVL navigation bar or directly at:

A substantial new article on The Lamb Inn, plus sketch plans as the pub was in 1930 and photos, has just been added to RW Standing's Virtual History of Angmering.

This article can be found in Section 5 of the Virtual Book via the History Centre (see navigation bar - left) or by clicking on the following link:

I wonder if a small experiemnt with internal lighting is desirable. A downward light at the top of the arches above the new windows, might be enough to bring up the colours even in normal English daylight. Not that it need be on all the time.
Lulu Posted - 07 Apr 2009 : 20:15:39
Nope. Sorry, they do nothing for me. When I look at the lovely windows that have gone before, it's almost like they took the quickest and cheapest way out this time. I see nothing in them that evokes any splendor, passion, or glory to God, as do the other lovely windows
I must recuse myself here, as well. I am not a church goer, and never have been. I am merely stating an opinion on what I consider an architectural faux pas.
neil Posted - 07 Apr 2009 : 17:02:17
Lulu, according to the Church's planning application submission, the arrow-shaped windows are symbolic and point to the "traditional heavenly location" above. If you do not like these, you should have seen the original design - not at all subtle. After many adverse comments, the amount of glass and arrowheads were significantly reduced.

To read more about the new windows, you can look at my revised article on the church's stained glass which I just happened to complete today. It can be found via the History Centre or by direct link at:

www.angmeringvillage.co.uk/history/Articles/Church_Windows.htm
Lulu Posted - 07 Apr 2009 : 16:21:13
I know as an outsider, my opinion counts for naught, but I have to say that I think the new windows are a disappointment. They look like giant arrows pointing skyward.

I have added to the Photos (Modern) page (see navigation bar on left) a photo of the complete east side of St Margaret's Church taken yesterday in the morning sunshine. This shows the two new buildings on either side of the chancel - i.e. the new "welcoming" entrance and the office/reception building. The photo can also be seen by clicking on the following direct link:

A substantial new article on the Angmering Tithe Apportionments plus 65 map extracts from the 1839 Angmering Tithe Map have recently been added to RW Standing's Virtual History of Angmering.

Those who had ancestors resident in Angmering at that time may be particularly interested to see from the tithe apportionments (schedules) and maps what land they occupied, whether as owners or tenants. There is also an Introduction which includes some details of the 1836 Tithe Act plus an overview of the Angmering magnates of the time. This article can be found in Section 2 of the Virtual Book via the History Centre (see navigation bar - left) or by clicking on the following link:

Those interested in Angmering history may have noticed the start of a substantial new history of the parish by RW Standing. This is in the form of a "Virtual Book" (simply hyperlinks to history pages on this website). It may take a year or more to complete. The majority of the pages that will come on stream will be new, but some existing pages have been utilised. The Book can be found via the main History Centre Index page or directly at:

www.angmeringvillage.co.uk/history/VirtualBook/Index_VB.htm

One of the pages just uploaded is on the history of cricket in Angmering and district. This may be found through the Virtual Book Index.

The first Newsletter from the Arundel Neighbourhood Specialist Team has been issued and you can read it by going to the Policing page (see navigation bar on left). The Newsletter contains an introduction to Arundel's new Supervisor, Sgt Carolyn Kendall, an article on the restructuring of Arundel NST, a report by PCSO Andrea Oakley on the speed monitoring in Angmering, and advice on Trick or Treating and Fireworks.

Two new photos have today been added to the "Modern Photos" gallery - these are ones of the April 2008 snow.

Three further photos have been added to the "Old Photos" slideshow. These are of the Forge (c1895), The Rosary (c1930), and the corner of Weavers Hill and Water Lane (c1895).

The Churchyard Memorial Inscriptions have now been completed up to 1949. The portal/index page to the project can be found via the History Pages Indices, or directly at:

Well, this is what many family history researchers have been waiting for!

Since March this year, Richard Standing (for the greater part) and myself (to a much lesser extent) have been trying to decipher inscriptions on the ancient gravestones and tombs in St Margaret's churchyard and to check them against burial registers and other documents. Richard has done a first class job. This part of the churchyard is the most difficult as many of the stones are 18th century and have badly eroded. Some 150 inscriptions are partly or fully readable and these are released today. The portal/index page to the project can be found via the History Pages Indices, or directly at:

www.angmeringvillage.co.uk/history/churchyard_inscriptions.htm

This is only the start of a long and arduous project which may end in 1000 memorials being recorded. It is hoped to publish a few more areas of the churchyard in the near future.

If you see a flashlight in the churchyard at midnight, do not be alarmed - it won't be body snatchers - it'll probably be Richard doing some more inscriptions! Creating the right lighting and shadows on the lettering is paramount, and nighttime can be an ideal time for this work.

How many burials do you think have taken place in the centre of Angmering over the centuries?

In a brand new and interesting illustrated article entitled "Angmering Churchyard Memorials - A Village Society at Rest", RW Standing estimates that there may have been 10,000 burials. But where are the graves? In this article, Mr Standing examines how styles of memorials have changed over the centuries and identifies some of the more wealthy families whose memorials survive today.
